Kobie Dee to headline ACT Reconciliation Day event

Jarred Cross -

Gomeroi rapper Kobie Dee will headline a major Reconciliation Day event on Ngunnawal Country.

The Australian Capital Territory has recognised the first Monday after or on May 27, the start of National Reconciliation Week, with a public holiday since 2018.

It's the only state or territory in the country to do so.

With it, the ACT hosts a public Reconciliation Day event with family-friendly and cultural activities - Kobie Dee to be centre to the celebrations on June 2.

The Bidjigal land-based artist backed up his acclaimed debut EP, 2021's Gratitude Over Pity, with the eight-track much-loved Chapter 26 last year.

"It means a lot to be able to share my stories and my voice at an event like this. I truly believe that as a country, moving forward means coming together to listen, to learn, and to share," Kobie Dee said.

"It's through storytelling that we can educate others about the deep and rich history of First Nations people, a history that has existed on this land for thousands of years."

In 2025, National Reconciliation Week celebrates the theme 'Bridging Now to Next', which Reconciliation Australia says "calls on all Australians to step forward together, to look ahead and continue the push forward as past lessons guide us".

Kobie Dee's advocacy and thoughtful expression is a great fit with this year's theme, ACT Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs Suzanne Orr said.

"Reconciliation is a collective effort, its about our whole community recognising and addressing the injustices and inequalities faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and working towards a society where everyone is treated with respect and equality," Ms Orr said.

"Kobie Dee's music resonates with these themes, and his presence will add to the diverse range of activities planned for the ACT's Reconciliation Day event at Commonwealth Park.

"All Canberrans have a role in reconciliation, and I encourage you to join us on June 2 to reflect on how we can work together to continue building a more inclusive and harmonious community."

Reconciliation Week is held annually in line with anniversaries of the 1967 Referendum and Mob High Court Decision.

Kobie Dee will take stage for Ngana Birrung (Black Stars in Dharug language) Festival as the headline act on Tuesday May 27 at Parramatta Town Hall.

The festival is a mutli-day collaboration event hosted by Western Sydney councils, with additional concert nights on Thursday May 22 at Campbelltown Arts Centre and Sherringham Reserve, Cranebrook on Friday 23.

"While Parramatta is an emerging global city, it is equally important to respect its past and we are proud to host Ngana Birrung to celebrate over 60,000 years of First Nations culture through an exciting music festival," Parramatta Lord Mayor Martin Zaiter said.
