Thomas Weatherall’s Blue shines in WA Premiere

Joseph Guenzler -

Black Swan's latest production, 'Blue', has opened to widespread acclaim at the State Theatre Centre, with audiences praising its emotional depth and powerful solo performance.

Written by Gamilaroi playwright and Heartbreak High actor Thomas Weatherall, 'Blue' is a poetic monologue exploring grief, identity and mental health.

Its WA premiere, running until 8 June, is led by Whadjuk Noongar actor Owen Hasluck and directed by Ian Wilkes.

Mr Hasluck makes his Black Swan debut in the role of Mark, a young man confronting the weight of personal loss and emotional turmoil.

His one-man performance has been met with standing ovations and described by audiences as "extraordinary", "captivating" and "full emotional, raw performance."

Mr Wilkes said he was drawn to the work for its honesty and emotional impact.

"Blue is such an amazing piece of writing that I fell in love with when I first read it," he said.

"I cried, I got very emotional – it's very powerful."

Mr Wilkes said the show explores the emotional weight of silence as much as dialogue.

"I approached Tom's writing with wanting to explore what's not being said," he said.

"There's some deeper meaning in the silence… sometimes we find it hard to express our emotions and there's another way to do it."

Mr Hasluck said he related to the story's themes of struggle and resilience.

"It's about morality and the demons we all face," he said.

"It's just such gorgeous work… deeply relatable."

Winner of the 2024 Matilda Award for Best New Australian Work, 'Blue' has been praised nationwide for its lyrical writing and emotional resonance.

Its WA season continues at Studio Underground until 8 June.
