As the ethereal voice of Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu continues to leave an unforgettable mark on both Australian and global audiences, on Wednesday it was announced the late singer's new posthumous album, Banbirrngu – The Orchestral Sessions, will be released on November 8.
The album's first single, also named Banbirrngu, was released Wednesday.
A Gumatj man from Arnhem Land in Australia's remote north, Gurrumul was one of the most famous Indigenous performers in modern Australian history. Sadly passing in 2017, the talented singer has left behind a rich legacy musically and culturally, which continues to be celebrated.
Singing predominantly in Yolngu languages, Yunupingu's music is characterised by its serene and haunting beauty, celebrated by critics and peers alike. Having earned multiple ARIA awards, the First Nations singer was passionate about creating music that resonated with Indigenous communities.

Banbirrngu - The Orchestral Sessions is produced by Michael Hohnen, arranged by Erkki Veltheim and was recorded in Prague by the Prague Metropolitan Orchestra conducted by Jan Chalupecký.
The new orchestral recordings revisit some of the singer's most well-known and beloved songs. The album explores a range of instrumentation from sparse to full orchestral expressions. Each piece reveals variation, reservation, and strength of purpose. The orchestra brings a unique sentiment to the performances, providing depth, breadth, and a dynamic range that cannot be achieved with an acoustic trio.
Gurrumul's experience with orchestras spanned over ten years, from an early performance at Carnegie Hall in New York to collaborations with most of the symphony orchestras in Australia. He cherished the rich and complex support an orchestra provided, offering a platform for his unique voice.

On this album, minimalism serves as a contrast to the full and swirling classical orchestration. It invites listeners into a meditative state, focusing not on the changes but on the absence of "action".
The new album was also mixed in Spatial Audio, the first time for any of Gurrumul's catalogue. Spatial Audio adds a new dimension to the recordings, offering a unique listening experience.
The first single, "Banbirrngu," is deeply rooted in ancestral references, encapsulating themes of birth, life, and the cyclical return to the earth.
As a whole, the record has unique boasting rights of containing some of the most ancient songlines and references amongst earth's living cultures, it is sure to be celebrated not just upon it's release today but the years that follow.
"Banbirrngu" is available for streaming now at all platforms and Banbirrngu - The Orchestral Sessions is available for preorder and presave today on digital, vinyl and CD formats. Banbirrngu - The Orchestral Sessions is out November 8th.
