Koorie Heritage Trust hosts NAIDOC Week market and exhibitions in Federation Square

Joseph Guenzler -

The Koorie Heritage Trust (KHT) will mark NAIDOC Week from 6 to 13 July with a program of community events, exhibitions and cultural activities at its home in Federation Square, Naarm.

This year's theme, 'The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy,' reflects on the achievements of Elders and the leadership of young people carrying that legacy forward.

KHT will host a NAIDOC Week Market on Friday 11 July from 1pm to 6pm, featuring more than 20 First Nations stallholders.

Stallholders include Clothing The Gaps, Haus of Dizzy, KaToBi, Kevin Williams Art Gallery, Mob Melts and Wickey Creations.

The market runs alongside NAIDOC in the City, a free concert presented by the City of Melbourne following the annual march from Parliament House to Federation Square.

Throughout the day, KHT will offer free workshops and all-ages activities with an Elders Lounge also available.

Two exhibitions will be on display during the week.

'Connections to Home' is the first solo show by Uncle Colin (Col) Clark, a Barkindji and Ngiyampaa Elder.

The works include carvings and paintings reflecting personal stories.

'Coming Home' features around 25 works by Dr Jenny Murray-Jones, a Yorta Yorta, Baraparapa and Wiradjuri artist.

The show includes works from the KHT Collection and recent pieces exploring cultural identity and memory.

From Monday to Friday, KHT will run extra Aboriginal Cultural Competency Workshops and its regular guided Aboriginal walking tours at 1pm.

KHT has also partnered with Wurruck Yambo (Gunai/Kurnai) to create NAIDOC Week-themed artwork for a limited edition range of postcards and art prints, available at shopKHT.
