A thrilling French twist has given a cutting-edge, Indigenous cultural celebration of biodiversity and creativity an exclusive feel this year.
The spectacular EverNow returns to Boorloo/Perth this October to ignite senses during Kambarang, the wildflower season of birth, new life and renewal.
The immersive, walk-through wonderland Boorna Waanginy: The Trees Speak returns to Kings Park, as will a fresh production of Song Circle, the mesmerising showcase of Noongar songs and dance led by Maatakitj – Noongar singer/guitarist Clint Bracknell, who reimagines new songlines as electrified, desert blues and dance music.
Held across iconic venues Kings Park and Burswood Park from October 3-7, the festival will show iconic city sites in a new light via a trio of epic displays and shows.
There is much hype after the festival's inaugural success in 2023 that cemented it as a home-grown signature event firmly grounded on Noongar Boodjar.
An Australian-exclusive and sky-high feature of EverNow 2024 is the appearance of French sky theatre masters Groupe F, in the thrilling collaboration From the Light Flow: Bena Koorliny, with leading Noongar performer Dr Richard Walley OAM and artist Alton Walley at Burswood Park, a new event hub in 2024.
After thrilling audiences at multiple Olympic Games ceremonies and other major global events, the French masters of light and fire's extraordinary public performance is an Australian-exclusive for EverNow, and Dr Walley said the show would stun audiences.
"This special collaboration is a powerful technical and artistic lens through which visitors can see and feel a deeper connection with the luminous natural world that we are so much a part of," he said.
The free EverNow festival from October 3-7 is spread across two iconic riverside leisure spots in Kings Park and Burswood Park and delivered by Tourism WA and Perth Festival's out-of-season Special Projects arm, guided by its Noongar Advisory Circle.
Boorna Waanginy: The Trees Speak
October 4-7, Kings Park, 7.30pm-10pm
(start your journey any time, duration approximately 45min)
The magic and drama of another awe-inspiring 2023 highlight is also back, the mesmerising and spectacular celebration of the regrowth and renewal of Kambarang.
Audiences embark on an immersive, after-dark walk through a tunnel of wonder along Fraser Avenue into the park, as stories of caring for Country come to life through high-tech light projections, animation, sound and song.
Stories of regrowth and new life are heard as fire flickers, rain descends, plants bloom and birds and other animals roam across and up above the treetops.
Acclaimed international director Nigel Jamieson joined Dr Walley and other artists and scientists on this breathtaking experience that melds culture, science and technology.
"Place, plants and animals are always communicating in some shape or form," Dr Walley said.
"All we have to do is take the time to listen, observe and absorb."
Song Circle
October 3-6, Burswood Park, 5.30pm-9pm
(15 minute duration, performances repeated every 30 minutes)
The banks of the Derbarl Yerrigan will shimmer with vibrant song, dance and light as singers, instrumentalists and dancers perform a celebratory cycle of Noongar songs reflecting on creatures and Country from Perth through to the Great Southern.
At the heart of Song Circle is an outdoor circular revolving stage, with acclaimed Noongar performer Maatakitj and a cast of musicians and singers encircled by dancers, who respond to the songs on a ring of sand bathed in a kaleidoscopic sea of light.
With Dr Roma 'Yibiyung' Winmar as cultural advisor, Song Circle is a theatrical energetic experience brought to life by lauded director Kylie Bracknell (Hecate, Little J and Big Cuz).
The stories of the Woordawort dragonfly, the Yornan bobtail, seasonal rainstorms, stingrays, bull sharks, dolphins and Boodjar itself are beautifully evoked in a joyous celebration of Noongar culture and heritage.
"Song Circle is a defiant act of restoration, strengthening connection to the original performance vibration of this place, Noongar Boodjar, our homelands," Ms Bracknell said.
"It immerses performers and audience members in Noongar language and song traditions like nothing else inside the United Nations Decade of Indigenous languages."
