Bala Kaijo releases first Independent single 'Luv Ya'

Joseph Guenzler -

Torres Strait Islander musician Bala Kaijo, from St Paul's Village on Moa Island, has officially released his first independent single, 'Luv Ya'.

The serene, island-style track is now available on all major streaming platforms, marking a significant milestone in his music career.

Bala Kaijo has previously collaborated with other artists, featuring on Maupower's tracks 'The Gift' and 'Step by Step', but 'Luv Ya' is his first solo release.

"It's the first time for me releasing my own music," he said.

"The songs I'm releasing each week are my own originals leading up to the release of my EP."

"Some of my songs do feature other artists also."

Describing the inspiration behind 'Luv Ya', Bala Kaijo shared that it reflects on his personal journey through past and present relationships.

"This song basically tells the story of my love life and the relationships I've had," he said.

"It's about the thoughts and emotions I went through from my first relationship to my current one," he said.

"The idea of the song speaks for itself – I just want to love and be loved and feel that emotion every day."

He also touched on a broader theme, believing love has the power to change the world.

"A lot of people underestimate the true meaning of love, and sometimes they confuse it with other feelings," he said.

"I truly believe if the world was filled with more love in general, it would be a much better place."

Bala Kaijo's music is deeply personal, covering a range of themes from family and culture to mental health and social issues.

"Each song tells a story," he said.

"I try to have all of my music give out a positive vibe, whether it's one of my truth-telling political songs or a deeper, more sensitive track."

"I believe music can heal the world's issues if it's used in the right way."

While reggae remains his primary genre, he has explored various styles, including R&B, hip-hop, Afro-pop, acoustic, and blues.

Recently, he has also been influenced by electronic dance music.

"Up until just recently, I was heavily influenced by Avicii's story and the passing of Fatman Scoop, so I started producing some EDM tracks to pay tribute and add to my genres."

He was also a participant in the Music Production Development program, curated by Uncle Kev Starkey and Australian music production icon, Magoo.

Here, he learned the ins-and-outs of Ableton Live whilst connecting with other rising talent like Mau Power, Soju Gang, Batjula and Tnert.

Looking ahead, Bala Kaijo has a busy schedule with live performances and new music releases.

"This year has already been a busy start for me, not only with music production but with getting booked for events around Cairns and local areas," he said.

"Now, with my first song finally up on streaming platforms, I'll be releasing one song every week for the next six to eight weeks, leading up to my first EP or album, which I've been working my hardest on."

With 'Luv Ya' now out and more music on the way, Bala Kaijo is making his mark as an independent artist, sharing his stories and uplifting messages through his sound.
