First Nations artist Emma Donovan has been nominated as a finalist in the Melbourne Prize for Music.

Ms Donovan, a Naaguja, Yamatji, and Gumbaynggirr/Danggali woman, has been singing since she was seven and has built a storied career in music.

She began as a singer in her uncle's band, The Donovans, and before co-founding the group Stiff Gins as a teenager, then going solo as a 23 year-old in 2004.

Ms Donovan has since gone from strength to strength, winning a string of music awards and performing at many major events, as well as in collaborations with renowned musicians including Frank Yamma, Archie Roach and Ruby Hunter, Kerriane Cox, Christine Anu, Tiddas, Yothu Yindi and Jimmy Little.

"Beyond excited to announce to be a finalist in the Melbourne Prize for Music for this year," she wrote on social media on Monday.

"So humbled to be amongst such good company. Big lub and big thanks to everyone who's supported my music."
