Thelma Plum collaboration brings together two Aussie classics

Proud Gamilaraay woman, musician and creator Thelma Plum, is certainly no stranger to the spotlight.

Plum and her music have been involved in everything from high profile campaigns and magazine covers - Plum fronted the cover for In-Style Magazine's re-launch earlier this year - to being featured in Netflix's 'Back To The Outback' animated feature film (starring Tim Minchin and Eric Bana).

This year Plum has joined forces with Australian footwear brand R.M. Williams to launch the brand's new Christmas campaign, 'Give Me Home'.

Paying tribute to Australian singer John Williamson and his classic song '(Give Me A) Home Among the Gum Trees', the new campaign sees Plum lend her vocals her own unique spin on the age-old classic.

First written in 1974, the popular track continues to live on fondly in many childhood memories, including Plum's.

"I spent a lot of time in the country in Delungra at my grandparents' farm when I was growing up and we used to have family singalongs. This is one of the songs that we'd dust off, with my grandfather playing guitar and little Thelma would sing and try and play piano. It was close to my heart and when we finished the song, I literally could not wait to play it to them," Plum told Style Up.

"I think the secret with songs like that is to try and make it your own without reinventing the song or changing it up too much. People already love the tune; you just have to own it a little. And not be too scared to have some fun with it."

Accompanying the re-freshed track, images and film from the campaign show scenes of a family running through kangaroo-filled paddocks, hanging sheets on a clothesline and quiet summer afternoons on the verandah of the family homestead.

Speaking on the collaboration with Plum and what the company hopes consumers take away from the campaign, R.M. Williams chief executive Paul Grosmann shared his excitement.

"The concept for our summer campaign was born from the classic Australian song, '(Give Me A) Home Among The Gum Trees' and pays tribute to the familiar scenes described in the lyrics. We knew we wanted to look at this song with fresh eyes and ears in 2024 and invite an emerging icon to lend their voice to a new recording," he told Style Up.

"As an award-winning Australian artist, Thelma Plum was naturally at the top of our list. Her understanding of our national culture and the diverse landscape at the heart of the song made her a natural fit, and the heart and soul that she has invested in this process is something we could only have dreamed of.

"Thelma is a true master of her craft and took such care when recording this song, as we take care in making each of our products. Through the collaborative process, we also uncovered so many shared experiences with Thelma, even travelling back to her childhood and her grandfather's agricultural work, which draw parallels with our roots in Australia's heartland."

"At the centre of our collaboration is a true respect for the country we collectively call home, and for the power of music and artistry to bring people together."

Plum said the collaboration was a good fit.

"We have always had a mutual appreciation, I guess. I have worn their boots a lot in the past and when they were thinking of people to get involved with this campaign, they asked the question – luckily, I loved the song as well," she said.

"I grew up in the country and lots of my family wore RM's, so it was not a hard decision to make, and I found one of my friends is actually related to one of the original writers of the song (it wasn't John although everyone knows his version) so it's all very close to home."

Grosmann said the partnership naturally transpired into a campaign with meaning for both the artist and the company.

"Craftsmanship is at the core of our business and we're passionate about connecting and collaborating with craftspeople of every discipline. We're honoured to have Thelma join us on this journey as we continue to build strong relationships with our Australian community, and uncover the ways in which we can show up in their lives," he said

"It's been a fantastic experience to collaborate so authentically with such a talented musician and even more amazing to see the film come to life.

"This is the first time that R.M. Williams has collaborated on a musical project of this nature, and it has illustrated the potential of collaborations when both parties are connected by shared values… Moving forward, we'll be looking to continually diversify our creative output and give our community more ways to be a part of our story, products and craftsmanship."

Plum said she has had an incredibly busy 2024 and is looking forward to taking it easy for the year's final few weeks - before kicking off again in 2025.

"It has been a wild year that's for sure! There was so much going on but I guess being able to play in Central Park in NY was very special. I have spent a lot of time there but never played in New York so to do it in such an amazing location was a real pinch me moment," she said.

"Putting out my second album is also a highlight but it was so busy with the release and tour that I am not sure I got to register it at the time. It was a long process to make the record, thanks to COVID, and I am very glad other people get to hear it now.

"I have to say I am enjoying having a little down time at the moment, but I have a lot of festivals in the first half of the year and then we are planning for some regional touring which I can't wait for."
