Indigenous chef partners with restaurant chain to celebrate National Reconciliation Week

Phoebe Blogg -

Celebrating native foods and connection to Country, Chargrill Charlie's has joined forces with Corey Grech - a proud Gamilaraay and Wonnarua man and founder of Native Botanical Brewery - to create a new limited-edition bush myrtle crunch salad.

Featuring a native blend of lemon myrtle, cinnamon myrtle, aniseed myrtle and dried saltbush, the new salad fuses taste with tradition.

The partnership between Chargrill Charlie's, an award-winning eatery, and Native Botanical Brewery comes ahead of National Reconciliation Week, with the offering available exclusively at Chargrill Charlie's Marrickville store from Tuesday May 27th until Tuesday June 3rd.

Based on Chargrill Charlie's beloved avocado and rocket salad, the new bush myrtle crunch salad salad has been reimagined to hero unique native Australian flavours - coined as a culinary tribute to reconciliation and shared stories.

Born and raised in Marrickville and Newtown, Mr Grech has 17 years of experience in the Australian native bush food industry, introducing flavours to the broader community and through his brews.

"The ingredients we used to create bush myrtle crunch are native foods from the oldest living culture in the world and that's pretty meaningful," Mr Grech said.

"It's been great to come back to Marrickville and share my passion for native foods with Chargrill Charlie's and the local community - I hope everyone loves tasting a bit of history and a bit of home."

This initiative forms part of Craveable Brands commitment to reconciliation through its second Reconciliation Action Plan, reinforcing the company and Chargrill Charlie's commitment to elevating First Nations voices, promoting tangible action towards reconciliation and fostering meaningful local-first collaborations.

Craveable Brands chief people officer and executive sponsor of reconciliation, Kathryn Farnell, said the company's network of Australian food brands and restaurant operators play a significant role in local neighbourhoods.

"With presence across regional and remote Australian communities in addition to metropolitan areas, our network of Australian food brands and restaurant operators play an important role in local neighbourhoods," she said.

"We take seriously the impact we can have on employment and social connection, and that is the driving force behind our commitment to reconciliation.

"Local collaborations like this are a great example of how we bring our reconciliation commitment to life through something that unites us all - food."

In 2022 Craveable Brands became the first quick service restaurant brand to formally commit to reconciliation through their Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan.

The limited-edition bush myrtle crunch salad (RRP $8.90) will be available exclusively at the Chargrill Charlie's Marrickville store during National Reconciliation Week - Tuesday 27 May - Tuesday 3 June.
