David Prestipino -

West Australian Opera has appointed Ballardong woman and Noongar language champion Gina Williams AM to its board.

Ms Williams has had a long-standing collaborative relationship with WA Opera, having co-written two Noongar-language works, Koolbardi wer Wardong in 2021 and Wundig wer Wilura in 2024.

Together with musician and frequent co-collaborator Guy Ghouse, Ms Williams has written four albums, performed at the 2021 AFL Grand Final in Perth and been awarded six prestigious WA Music Awards.

She also wrote Wanjoo / Welcome, which is taught in schools across Western Australia and features in the Boorla Bardip WA Museum.

Ms Williams said she was delighted and honoured to join the WAO board.

"I love the works they present and the local voice they amplify in their programming, both on stage and within the community of WA," she said.

Ms Williams said she felt excited about the journey ahead as a WAO board member.

"I am looking forward to bringing lots of ideas and experience as an arts practitioner," she said.

WA Opera chair Andrew Pascoe said Ms Williams' contribution over the past few years had guided West Australian Opera in new directions, and the company was proud to welcome such an esteemed collaborator, songwriter and performer to WAO.

"We welcome her expertise as a songwriter, storyteller and performer, and value her deep knowledge of language as a Ballardong woman and Noongar language champion," he said.
