Artists, musicians and designers from across the East Kimberley are set to take centre stage at a new cultural event debuting at this year's Ord Valley Muster in Kununurra.

The event, Colours of Country, will be held on May 17 at Celebrity Tree Park, bringing together artists and performers from across the region.

Kununurra sits in Western Australia's East Kimberley, about 3,000 kilometres north of Perth.

Work from several East Kimberley arts organisations and independent artists will be featured, including Waringarri Aboriginal Arts, Warmun Art Centre, Tjarrambayi Arts, Yarlyil Arts, Kira Kiro Artists and the Halls Creek Women's Hub.

The lineup also includes Family Shoveller Band, Walmatjarri Elder and blues singer Kankawa Nagarra, and Broome acoustic duo Saltwater Kin.

Ord Valley Events Inc. chair, Sophie Cooke, said the event aimed to highlight the depth of creative talent across the East Kimberley.

"Colours of Country has been thoughtfully curated for artists, visitors and locals alike," Ms Cooke said.

"The music program will bring beautiful energy to the night with Family Shoveller Band, Kankawa Nagarra and Saltwater Kin creating a rich soundtrack of Kimberley stories, spirit and connection to Country."

The evening will also feature the unveiling of the Boonkaj II Collection, a wearable art project developed by artists from Waringarri Aboriginal Arts in Kununurra.

The collection includes textile designs by artists Peggy Griffiths, Agnes Armstrong and Delany Griffiths, drawing on bush plants and traditional knowledge from Miriwoong Country.

The garments have been screen-printed in Kununurra on linen and cotton fabrics and form the second collection from the Boonkaj project, which aims to create opportunities for Aboriginal women through textile design and fashion.

Ms Cooke said the fashion parade would be a highlight of the event.

"It's a powerful showcase of wearable art from Waringarri Aboriginal Arts, celebrating culture, storytelling and the incredible talent of artists from Miriwoong Country," she said.

The event will be hosted by Wyndham creative Molly Hunt, a Balanggarra and Yolŋu woman with ties to Bunuba, Jaru and Gija Country.

Ms Hunt is known across the Kimberley as a digital artist, animator and muralist.

Bush foods will also be shared on the night, with Blak Tapas and local knowledge holders cooking over open fires.

Guests will be able to sample dishes including crocodile, barramundi and kangaroo.

Colours of Country forms part of the Ord Valley Muster, which runs in Kununurra from May 15 to 24.

The festival celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2026.

The Muster is supported by the Western Australian Government through Tourism WA's Regional Events Program.
