Boorloo / Perth based indie outfit South Summit have released their new single and video HEARTLESS ahead of their forthcoming sophomore album RUN IT BACK.
The album is set for release on Friday, June 12, with the single marking the fourth taste of the project.
Written during a creative retreat in Yallingup, Western Australia, HEARTLESS came together on the final day of a week-long writing trip and became one of the standout tracks from the album.
The band explain the song's origins and emotional focus.
"We went down south and recorded this one at our mate's massive property... This was our first session where we officially started the album," frontman Zaya said.
"It's a real heartbreak story about a past relationship.
"It's about heartbreak, but it's uplifting at the same time - it flips that feeling so people can feel a bit better about themselves."
Bandmate Nath said the song came together quickly.
"We started this tune on the last day of that writing trip," Nath said.
"We had three hours left and just ran with an idea. It was pretty much started and finished within that time. It had an instant impact - it's quite a heartfelt song."
The track explores the feeling of drifting away from someone once loved, while balancing heartbreak, accountability and release.
The single also continues South Summit's move through reggae-infused indie rock, dance and house-inspired melodies, while holding onto the band's focus on storytelling.
The accompanying video was filmed on Bluff Knoll in Western Australia, with the band making the climb in the early hours of the morning with a small crew.
The band said the result matched what they had imagined for the track.
"For the Heartless video, we were up at 1am starting the four-hour hike up Bluff Knoll with just a tiny crew - literally just our videographer and a drone operator," the band said.
"By the time we got to the top we were already cooked, but we just kept running takes over and over on the mountain.
"We were completely exhausted, but it looked exactly how we pictured it, so it was 100 per cent worth it."
The release follows a growing run for South Summit, including a 15-date UK and European tour supporting The Terrys, national airplay for recent singles and the announcement of their biggest Australian headline shows to date.
The band will also tour Australia and Aotearoa / New Zealand, with tickets available via the bands website.
