La Boite Theatre will premiere 'Eat Slay Zombie' at the Roundhouse Theatre from 14 to 30 May, bringing a new horror-comedy work to the stage.

The production, written by Githabul-Migunberri-Yugumbeh woman Alinta McGrady, follows Sheree and Tash as they survive a zombie apocalypse from inside a bowling alley-turned-bunker.

The pair document their lives through their online personas '@BLKBUNKERBTCHES', sharing zombie kill tallies and doomsday tutorials before another survivor arrives and disrupts their isolated world.

Ms McGrady is co-directing the work with Samoan-Australian artist Lisa Fa'alafi, with both artists known for mixed-genre storytelling that draws on pop culture and hip hop.

McGrady said the production uses humour and spectacle to explore survival and connection.

"Eat Slay Zombie is chaotic, funny and hyper-theatrical; it follows two fierce women navigating survival together when everything around them is falling apart," she said.

"While humour and spectacle are centre stage, it's grounded in the relationship between these two women and the ways we hold onto each other during times of uncertainty."

The production blends live performance with music, choreography and visual design, with a soundtrack featuring Indigenous artists including BARKAA, Miss Kaninna and TJAKA.

Ms Fa'alafi said the work pushes contemporary theatre into new territory.

"This production is a genre-defying, full-bodied theatrical experience that brings together music, choreography, design and performance in a way that feels bold and unapologetic," she said.

"Songs erupt from phone screens, dance routines spill out of viral videos and digital culture collides with live perfromance to create something fast, funny and high energy.

"But at its core, it's an intimate story and we're excited for audiences to come along for that journey."

The cast features Juliette Coates, Shahnee Hunter and Jalen Sutcliffe, supported by a creative team including La Boite Artistic Director and CEO Courtney Stewart as dramaturg and Rozina Suliman as set designer.

'Eat Slay Zombie' first ran at QPAC in 2024, where it was met with strong reception.

Ms McGrady said the work had been shaped through collaboration.

"Co-directing this work has been about building a room where everyone feels safe, celebrated and able to bring their ideas forward," Ms McGrady said.

"There's laughter, there's experimentation, there's a real sense of collective creativity and that's the energy we want audiences to feel when they walk into the theatre."

'Eat Slay Zombie' will play at La Boite's Roundhouse Theatre in Kelvin Grove from Thursday 14 May to Saturday 30 May 2026, with opening night on Saturday 16 May.

The season also includes an artist talk and Auslan-interpreted performance on 22 May, and a Pay What You Can performance on 28 May.
