3% honour Indigenous icons in 'Our Greats'

Joseph Guenzler -

Indigenous rap collective 3% have released a music video for their single 'Our Greats' to mark the beginning of NAIDOC Week.

The group, made up of Nooky, Dallas Woods and Angus Field, said the release pays tribute to Indigenous leaders who have inspired generations.

The video features images of athletes and change-makers including Cathy Freeman, Patty Mills, Ash Barty and Adam Goodes.

Dallas Woods said the song recognises those who helped shape the path forward.

"'Our Greats' is a tribute to the giants who walked before us," he said.

"The ones who dared to believe, who fought through adversity, and who laid the foundation so we could stand tall today."

Angus Field said the song is a reminder of legacy.

"The legacy that they wove into our rich history creates a timely reminder of who we are and what we can achieve," Mr Field said.

"For those who are still to come, they paint a picture of inspiration for them to excel and exceed from what has already been done by our people."

The music video draws on a story from We Are Warriors, a social organisation founded by Nooky that supports Indigenous youth.

It includes footage of a young man from Trangie travelling to the United States to meet his idol Patty Mills.

His journey is shown alongside clips of young children watching and learning about iconic figures.

Cathy Freeman's 2000 Olympic torch appears as a lasting symbol of pride and achievement.

The chorus features young people from We Are Warriors programs along with Nooky's children, who sing "standing on the shoulders of our greats."

Nooky said the song is personal and reflects years of work with youth in his community.

"One day I had this beat from One Above and I came up with a little hook and verse... a few months later me and Gus got in the studio with Andy and we refined the idea to what you hear now," he said.

"Andy said it would be good to get some kids on the hook.

"My eldest daughter had been asking to do a song with us since hearing her sister Calula on 'Coming Home'... through the work we do with We Are Warriors we have a lot of young mob in the programs who can rap and sing."

Nooky said he was proud to see how connected the children were to the community's heroes.

"They were rattling off too many names to fit in the song... I felt proud that these kids knew who Cathy Freeman is, who Ash Barty and Adam Goodes are."

"To hear them stand up and sing with such strength and hope blows me away."

Since their debut with 'Our People' featuring The Presets, 3% have gained widespread recognition.

Their 2023 album 'Kill The Dead*' earned two ARIA Awards and nominations across the J Awards and AIR Awards.

The group also won Song of the Year at the NIMAs and were named Best New Artist at the Rolling Stone Awards.

They have performed at major events including Dreamtime at the G, Treaty Day Out and VIVID Sydney.

The video is available to watch on Youtube.
