Snake Nest, a bold and evocative work by Noongar artist Darryl Dempster has been selected by Reconciliation WA as the National Reconciliation Week (NRW) Street Banner Project artwork.
This year more than 300 banners and digital displays across Western Australia will showcase Mr Dempster's work, inviting communities to reflect on themes of connection, family, and reconciliation from May 27 to June 3.
Born in Kepa Kurl/Esperance and now residing in Boorloo/Perth, Mr Dempster is a proud Noongar man whose artistic journey is as unique as his vibrant works.
Living with limited verbal abilities, he uses a combination of hand gestures and sounds to communicate.
Mr Dempster's work is characterised by a raw, uninhibited style that incorporates explosive splashes of colour and gestural marks, resulting in vibrant, dynamic compositions.

Mr Dempster's creativity knows no bounds, as he transforms found objects such as lamps, street signs, garments, and even paper bags into striking canvases.
Each piece tells a vivid narrative, skillfully blending his lived experience with cultural knowledge and storytelling.
Through his art Mr Dempster shares a perspective that is uniquely his own, one that bridges personal expression and the enduring strength of Noongar culture.
His artistic expression began shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic, a time when he discovered joy and connection through colour and creativity.
His work quickly evolved, initially exploring themes of identity, history, and memory with darker tones and experimental mediums.
Nowdays his art radiates life and energy, exemplified by Snake Nest, which honours the sacredness of motherhood and the bonds that connect all living things.
Rocky Bay Team Leader Talei Mackenzie, who has supported Mr Dempster's artistic growth, shared thoughts together on what art means to him.
"It's like a dance, you know? I start with a blank canvas and let my emotions guide me. Sometimes I'll see something—a superhero, a stop sign—and it sparks an idea," Mr Dempster said.
"Then I just let my hands do the talking. I hope they see the beauty in everyday things. Life can be tough sometimes, but there's always something to appreciate.
"I want my art to bring joy and hope to people, to remind them that there's magic in the world if you just take the time to look."
Ms Mackenzie said Mr Dempster's journey is a testament to the transformative power of art.
"To see his work displayed in over 300 locations during National Reconciliation Week 2025 is a tremendous achievement, and a reflection of how far his talent has taken him," Ms Mackenzie said.
Reconciliation WA CEO, Jody Nunn, expressed admiration for Mr Dempster's story and the significance of the NRW Street Banner Project in sharing his work.
"Darryl's art is a powerful reminder of the beauty and strength within Aboriginal culture," Ms Nunn said.
"Through this project, his talent will inspire thousands across the state. Supporting Aboriginal artists like Darryl is a vital step toward unity and understanding.
"His journey is an inspiration, showing how art can transcend barriers and bring people together."

The NRW Street Banner Project not only celebrates Mr Dempster's artistic achievements but also highlights Reconciliation WA's dedication to sustainability.
The banners, crafted from recyclable and upcyclable materials, reflect the organisation's commitment to environmental stewardship.
Following the campaign, the banners will be repurposed into products like construction materials, eyewear, and park benches, reducing waste and promoting creativity within local communities.
"Our commitment to sustainability ensures that every banner contributes to a broader cycle of reuse and innovation," Ms Nunn said.
"This aligns with our values of environmental care and ensures the NRW Street Banner Project creates a lasting impact for generations to come."
Snake Nest will also feature on a range of merchandise launching in March 2025, allowing Australians to celebrate Mr Dempster's artistry beyond National Reconciliation Week.
Reconciliation WA invites individuals, families, and organisations to support the initiative by purchasing a banner and joining the journey toward a more united and inclusive future.
