The South Australian Film Corporation has appointed Kirstie Parker as its inaugural Head of First Nations.

Ms Parker is a Yuwaalaraay woman from north-western New South Wales who lives in Adelaide on Kaurna land.

She brings to the role more than 25 years of leadership experience across Indigenous advocacy, policy, journalism, the arts, tourism and government.

She is currently Co-Chair of Reconciliation Australia and runs her own First Nations consultancy.

Ms Parker said she shared the agency's commitment to amplifying Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices.

"I'm very happy to be joining the SAFC, sharing – as I do – its values and commitment to elevating First Nations voices and stories and fostering a representative and inclusive screen culture and industry," she said.

She said she viewed storytelling and truth-telling as crucial to strengthening relationships.

"First Nations perspectives and insights matter, especially at this critical and challenging time in Australia and globally.

"I see storytelling – and truth-telling – as vital to uplifting our voices and fostering better relationships with all who walk our lands.

"Increasing support, understanding and shared pride in First Nations people, cultures and languages can be transformative, nation-building, joyous. I am here for that."

Ms Parker's previous roles include Strategic Adviser to the Uluru Dialogue, Director of Aboriginal Affairs and Reconciliation for the South Australian Government, CEO of the National Centre of Indigenous Excellence, editor of The Koori Mail and Director of Tandanya.

She was also elected Co-Chair of the National Congress of Australia's First Peoples.

Her contributions have been recognised with several awards, including the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom Australian Peacewoman Award and the Queensland Literary Awards Unaipon Award.

Ms Parker will begin in the role on 28 April.
