Wayne Bergmann's memoir released as an audiobook

Joseph Guenzler -

The audiobook version of Some People Want to Shoot Me, the memoir of Nyikina man Wayne Bergmann, has been released, bringing his story of cultural, political and personal struggle to a wider audience.

Narrated by Tamala Shelton and published by Fremantle Press, the six-hour production captures Mr Bergmann's path from backbreaking station work to leading the Kimberley Land Council during the high-stakes James Price Point gas hub negotiations.

"I've spent the majority of my life fighting for the rights of Traditional Owners," Mr Bergmann said.

"This has put me in the firing line. But I chose this job, I chose this political path. My family did not."

Mr Bergmann was 33 when he became Kimberley Land Council CEO, taking on mining companies and government while juggling family responsibilities.

"It was a roller-coaster ride, a pressure cooker; there was no support, no training," he said.

"You were literally thrown out in the deep end … and it was sink or swim."

Madelaine Dickie, who co-wrote the book with Mr Bergmann, said listening to the audiobook gave her a fresh perspective.

"It was a real treat to listen to the book performed by an actress as talented as Tamala," Ms Dickie said.

"She reads beautifully, and her emphasis on certain lines made me notice nuances I hadn't picked up on before."

Ms Dickie said the format offered greater accessibility.

"I love audiobooks. I'm always busy, so being able to listen to books on the go is a pretty crucial part of my daily routine," she said.

"I'm glad our book is now available to those who struggle to read, or those who have vision impairment, or those who do lots of long drives."

Ms Dickie said her main challenge during the writing process was ensuring the voices of Traditional Owners were respected.

"It was very, very important to me that Wayne's story was told properly and accurately," she said.

"The biggest challenge for me was making sure every Traditional Owner I interviewed was happy with their quotes and happy with the way they were represented on the page."

Ms Dickie described the book as fast-paced and rich with significant moments.

"In Some People Want to Shoot Me, Wayne gets lost and nearly dies in the desert with his children, he gets 'sung' into falling in love with his wife, he has famous stoushes with state premiers, federal politicians and mining magnates, all while fighting for a better deal for his mob," she said.

"Wayne's story, while so colourful and individual, also connects in with the wider currents of our nation's history, and that's what makes it so special."

Some People Want to Shoot Me is available on Audible for $9.75.
