The Kimberley Aboriginal Fashion Textiles Art fashion runway (KAFTA) returns on June 1 this year, building on the growing interest and engagement in textile and fashion developments within WA and nationwide.

KAFTA has inspired Kimberley textile printers, fashion makers and designers as well as creatives in performance and photography.

In response to calls from Kimberley art professionals and regional communities for locally-based creative and fashion industry pathways, KAFTA created a platform for local creatives to develop and present their fashion and textiles.

"KAFTA is back in 2025 to celebrate Kimberley Aboriginal fashion, textiles and creative industries over the June long weekend! Designers and artists an EOI call out for collections and stalls is coming. Can't wait to see what everyone is creating for this year's runway," the KAFTA team said in a statement this week.

On Sunday June 1 the KAFTA runway returns, with a fresh showcase of Kimberley Aboriginal fashion, textiles and performances, then on Monday June 1 the KAFTA Pop Up Fashion Fair will provide consumers with the opportunity to buy direct from Kimberley creatives in Broome.

Participating designers and art centres are yet to be announced.

Jalayimiya Swim founder and proud First Nations fashion designer, Brodie George who participated in the 2024 runway said that the event has a positive impact on both the community and designers.

"I was very emotional on the day and the days leading up to it watching all the prep. KAFTA has such a great impact on our community and this event will definitely be a highlight of the year for all involved," she said.

Taking place as part of Broome Fringe Festival, the events to-date have presented Kimberley community-led experiences, showcasing 13 clothing collections, featuring 53 artists work, engaged 78 young Indigenous models, and 52 Indigenous performers. It is also important to know that KAFTA is completely Kimberley run engaging local businesses to provide equipment and event services.

KAFTA runway will take place on Sunday the 1st of June.
