Baker Boy has released 'CURSE', a new single from his forthcoming 'DJANDJAY (Deluxe)' album, due out later this year through Island Records and Universal Music Australia.
The proud Yolŋu artist has been performing the track during his 10-date Australian album tour, which followed his appearance at Groovin' The Moo, last week.
"Everyone has been going mad for it, you know you got something good when people haven't ever heard the track before, but you can see the whole crowd bouncing to it," Baker Boy said.
'CURSE' was written and produced in Melbourne by Baker Boy, Pip Norman and Rob Amoruso, with Toronto songwriter and producer WondaGurl joining the track through the inaugural ARIA Collab Initiative.
"It was really powerful getting to work with WondaGurl alongside Pip and Rob," Baker Boy said.
"I think she added this flavour and energy to the track that really fills out the room.
"Really grateful to ARIA for the opportunity to work with a heavy hitter like WondaGurl."
The track uses Yidaki in a different way, with the instrument pitched down to create an 808 sub sound and pitched up to create a horn-like sound.
"We used a Yidaki and pitched it down to create the sound of an 808 sub," Baker Boy said.
"We then also pitched the Yidaki up to make it sound like a horn that you hear throughout the track.
"This is a really different approach to how we usually incorporate Yidaki so it was really fun getting to experiment with that, being able to work it into the track in a less immediately obvious way."
Baker Boy said the song explores survival, pressure and strength.
"CURSE is kind of about survival," he said.
"It's about navigating the music industry, dealing with a certain level of fame and expectation, as well as sometimes being your own worst enemy and getting in your own head.
"I look at it like sometimes the best things in my life can also be some of the most challenging, and I don't want to be ungrateful for the opportunities but trying to find that balance to be able to brush off the negativity and own my shit."
The single is accompanied by a stripped-back black and white video directed and co-produced by Jordan Ruyi Blanch, with creative direction and styling by Aurie Indianna and lighting by Remus Care-Parisi.
The visuals continue the world built across the 'DJANDJAY' videos filmed at Werribee Mansion, including 'FREAK OUT', 'RUNNING LOW', 'LIGHTNING' and 'THICK SKIN'.
'DJANDJAY' debuted at number one on the ARIA Top 10 Australian Hip Hop/R&B Album Chart and number three on the ARIA Australian Album Chart.
The album includes 'PEACEKEEPER', 'FREAK OUT' feat. Briggs and Haiku Hands, 'LIGHTNING' feat. REDD., 'THICK SKIN' feat. Thelma Plum, Emma Donovan, Kee'ahn and Jada Weazel, and 'RUNNING LOW' feat. Pardyalone.
Baker Boy's triple j Like A Version cover of BLACKPINK's 'JUMP' has also become a staple of his live set.
'CURSE' is available via all major streaming platforms now.
