As the Brisbane Broncos prepare to celebrate Deadly Choices Round at Suncorp Stadium, the Club is proud to support the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF) as its Round 24 50-50 Charity Raffle partner.
Responding directly to Community requests for culturally relevant books, early learning board books, resources and literacy programs, The Indigenous Literacy Foundation works in partnership with remote First Nations Communities across Australia.
ILF also supports Communities to create, publish and share their own stories in the languages of their choice, with director of Programs and publishing Zoe Cassim saying the work was about ensuring children could see their cultures, languages and Communities reflected in the stories they read.
"The power of seeing yourself in the book you read, seeing and hearing your language spoken, seeing your artwork and characters that look like you, in places that you recognise... that is legacy and it's a feeling of being valued enough to be seen and represented," she said.
"The ILF books and programs aim to support all generations of the families we are lucky to support and work alongside.
"Every child deserves to have access to books in their Home Language (and) every child deserves to be seen and heard."
With a minimum cash prize of $40,000 up for grabs, fans can also support the Indigenous Literacy Foundation this Saturday night by purchasing a 50-50 Charity Raffle ticket.
Cassim said every contribution helped the Foundation continue its work alongside more than 500 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
"We are fully not-for-profit, which means every dollar and cent raised, every person who shares our work or wears our merch, that money goes straight back into the 500+ Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities that we work with," she said.
The Brisbane Broncos will support Deadly Choices Round at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday, as the Club's NRL and NRLW teams come together for a double-header as part of NRL Indigenous Round.
Deadly Choices is an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander preventative health brand which has maintained a long-standing collaboration with the Broncos.
The partnership uses the reach of rugby league to encourage Indigenous people to make positive choices for their health.
An initiative of the Institute for Urban Indigenous Health (IUIH), Deadly Choices is Australia's leading Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander preventative health program.
The initiative aims to empower Indigenous peoples to make healthy choices for themselves and their families such as eating healthy, being physically active, not smoking or vaping and connecting with a Community Controlled Health Service for a 715 Health Check - a specific Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health check focused on key areas of risk.
The team will also play mini league on Suncorp Stadium as part of Saturday night's action alongside Deadly Choices teams from ATSICHS Brisbane, Yulu-Burri-Ba Aboriginal Corporation for Community Health, Goolburri Aboriginal Health Advancement and Galangoor Duwalami Primary Healthcare.
IUIH chief executive and Torres Strait Islander man from Mabuiag and Yam, Wayne Ah Boo, said Deadly Choices Round was an important opportunity to celebrate community and the partnership, while encouraging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to take control of their health.
"We are excited to celebrate our 15-year partnership with the Brisbane Broncos at this year's Deadly Choices Round," Ah Boo said.
"This particular round is about platforming our community for their commitment to making healthy choices, celebrating our culture and inspiring the next generation's health journey."
