First Nations designers to feature at Karrinyup Shopping Centre 2025 NAIDOC Week showcase

Phoebe Blogg -

Scheduled to celebrate the upcoming 2025 NAIDOC Week, Karrinyup Shopping Centre announced this month a first-of-its-kind retail and cultural activation.

From July 6-13, a selection of WA-based Indigenous-owned brands will take over high visibility locations throughout Karrinyup in a premium, artisian-style, pop-up experience, offering visitors a unique opportunity to shop, learn, and connect.

Each business will receive a premium-located pop-up space throughout the centre; marketing and digital promotion, including a feature on our website; an eDM profiling each designer to a database of over 100k; plus countless networking opportunities, entirely funded by Karrinyup as part of their commitment to Reconciliation.

From fashion and art to accessories, these innovative businesses are all WA-based and Indigenous-owned, offering a range of high-quality products that reflect deep connections to Country, community, and cultural practice. Participating brands include Kirrikin, Jalayimiya Swim, Lajala The Label, Deadly Denim, and Kaarli.

General manager of Karrinyup, Trudy Cook, said the centre was delighted to put a spotlight on the Indigenous leaders in fashion, art, and culture.

"We are honoured to be able to showcase art and amplify the voices of these incredible first nations business owners in a way that not only reflects business aspirations but their heritage too," she said.

"This is about creating a meaningful and immersive experience - one that moves people beyond just shopping, and into storytelling."

Proud Walmajarri woman and owner of Jalayimiya Swim, Brodie George, says this activation offers a valuable opportunity to grow her brand and inspire others.

"Being part of this activation is more than just a retail opportunity, it's incredibly meaningful" says Brodie. "It gives us the platform to be connected with a new customer base while also being able to educate store visitors on the beauty and richness of our culture," she said.

In alignment with the 2025 NAIDOC theme "The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy", the showcase celebrates future industry leaders while honouring past achievements.

The week-long activation will also include a nightly projection of artworks by the late Noongar artist Joan Martin and a performance in The Cafe Terrace on Thursday the 10th of July by First Nations Musician Lachy John.

Karrinyup NAIDOC week showcase runs from Sunday the July 6th - Sunday July 13th.
