Indigenous/Torres Strait reggae band South Summit have released their latest single 'We Are', a bold redefinition of their sound that blends reggae influences with a West Coast hip-hop influence.
The track, released through G.Y.R.O., shows a confident new chapter for the Perth-based band, known for their genre-bending approach and powerful live performances.
Following the success of their breakout single 'Top of the Hill' - which earned high rotation on triple j and support from Rolling Stone - South Summit have leaned into a heavier, production-led direction.
'We Are' combines commanding rhythms, layered instrumentation and a hook-driven structure that reflects both unity and rebellion.
The band said the track speaks to the importance of self-belief and collective strength.
"'We Are' is about moving through life without listening to the norms of society," they said.
"When we come together and have each other's backs, we won't fold to anything."
Guitarist Josh described the song's origins as inspired by "the loading screen for Grand Theft Auto," setting the tone for its cinematic energy.
The band recorded the track at Blackbird Studios in a single high-energy session, capturing what they call "a gangster sound that's gonna touch the soul."
The single marks South Summit's first major step into hip-hop production, incorporating beat-heavy arrangements while maintaining the band's signature reggae-infused style.
They said fans should expect "energy and a bit more grit" from 'We Are' compared to earlier releases.
"We love to keep our fans on their toes and give them something new with every release," they said.
"This song reaches a new era for us - and it's the perfect time to express that."
We Are has already proven a standout moment during live performances, first tested on stage while supporting Tash Sultana at Sydney's Enmore Theatre.
The band said the audience reaction confirmed its place as one of their most powerful songs to date.
South Summit will perform 'We Are' live for the first time on their Eastside Headline Tour this month, with shows scheduled for Melbourne and Sydney alongside Cheeky Leash, Local The Neighbour and Civic Video.
The group will also appear at Triple J's 50th Anniversary celebration in Newcastle, Spilt Milk Festival, and Sweet Home Aotearoa in Auckland, before joining Tash Sultana's 2026 European tour across Germany, Austria, Ireland and the UK.
With 'We Are', South Summit continue to explore their musical identity though a mix of reggae, rock and hip-hop influences grounded in themes of unity and strength.
The single is available on all major streaming platforms.
South Summit are set for a major run of shows across Australia, New Zealand and Europe, kicking off this month and continuing through March 2026.
