Yuin singer-songwriter KYARNA has marked a significant milestone in her music career; closing in on the release of her debut solo single 'Meet in Love'.
The track is the first offering from her forthcoming EP 'Lost Soul Love Letters' and draws on deeply personal experiences of love, loss and memory.
Produced by ARIA Award-winner Matt Fell, the country-folk ballad blends stripped-back acoustic arrangements with storytelling rooted in grief and hope.
The song was written years ago, but took on new meaning earlier this year when the person who inspired it passed away.
"It's really bittersweet now," KYARNA told National Indigenous Times.
"I wrote it a few years back about a relationship that I had that kind of was just like we both loved each other, but it was just never the right time.
"He ended up passing away in April."
KYARNA chose to record the song just weeks after his death, describing the process as an emotional and physical challenge.
She had been unwell at the time and said her body was still carrying the weight of grief.
"I had no voice the day before I recorded," she said.
"I jumped in the end with Matt Fell and we ended up smashing it out… that song is like the anchor point for me for the EP.
"It still feels hopeful to me. It feels like maybe the next life, maybe not this one, but next time around."

"My mum ended up teaching me a couple of chords and I kind of just started teaching myself from there," she said.
"I used to sit in my room with my brother's guitar… just making up chords like I knew what I was doing."
In 2020, she and her cousin began sharing live performances online during COVID lockdowns, later releasing music together.
From there, KYARNA's solo career grew, leading to performances alongside some of Australia's most respected artists including Uncle Archie Roach, Paul Kelly, Troy Cassar-Daley, Casey Donovan and Nancy Bates.
"Uncle Archie is probably the biggest one," she said.
"I got the opportunity to open for him... even though he was sick and sitting down with his oxygen tank, just the power coming from him was brilliant.
"That was something I'll always cherish."
She credits her close relationship with Nancy Bates as a key influence on her career development, particularly during a two-year period spent living in Adelaide.
"She really advocated for me," KYARNA said.
"I did an artist residency last year and she was ringing mobs saying, 'You need to pay for this girl to get overseas.'"

'Lost Soul Love Letters,' set for release in November, will feature songs written as letters to different people and moments from her life.
She said the project doesn't shy away from difficult subjects, including family experiences with addiction and grief.
"These are part of my story and I'm not going to sit back and go, 'I'm not going to say that because I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings,'" she said.
"I've written a song about my brother and my mum and their heroin addiction.
"I think Blackfellas are different because we come from loss… that's just part of our stories."
Ahead of the full EP release, KYARNA plans to release two more singles in September and October.
She will also join Liz Stringer on a national tour, supporting seven shows between November and December.
"I'm just really excited to get out and go on the road with somebody who knows what they're doing," she said.
"I want to be touring, getting out, building an audience and just being out and about."
'Meet in Love' will be available on the 27th of August, with pre-sales available now.
