Baker Boy sells off pieces of iconic Australian streetwear

Andrew Mathieson -

He sets trends both mob and fashionista hipsters follow after once living in Milingimbi and Maningrida, on the edges of the Arnhem Land scrubs, before gracing red carpets and music festivals around the world.

And now the ultimate fan can step into Baker Boy's own shoes – quite literally – in an online bid for the Yolngu man's iconic Nikes.

The sneaker collection of Baker Boy is as extensive as they are well-worn, but as he checks through his wardrobe the rapper finds the pair of LeBron signature shoes which featured in many of his street-styled shows.

The pair is out of there, without a moment of hesitation.

"Someone will definitely love these ones," Danzal Baker says, before preparing to part with the footwear on eBay.

The bold designs full of bright colours and prints which stand out both in his video clips and on stage are up for sale in the 26-year-old's search for his next look, influenced by stylist and creative director girlfriend Aurie Indiana.

When she first watched Baker perform on stage, he was dressed from head to toe in black.

Baker Boy thought he was cool.

She thought the colours – or lack thereof – did not exude his act nor his energy.

The couple now pull out one famous item after another, deciding whether it should stay or go.

The orange, purple and royal blue tracksuit jacket catches Baker's eye. It stays.

"This one has a lot of memory for me because it was like the second time I had ever wore colour," Baker says.

They have curated a wardrobe that tell stories through his family's artistic ways.

It fills a fashion narrative that is something more than just the obvious aesthetics.

"Fashion plays such a big role in my career," he says.

"Gets me into this character where I'm Baker Boy, crazy, go in and to have fun. Magic."

Despite wardrobe changes, Baker Boy remains true to his original act of moves once played out on an outside Arnhem Land Basketball court to the enjoyment of his mob.

He's the same artist who wore a glittering baby blue tracksuit jack and pants while bursting out of his 2021 AFL grand final performance.

"I describe my personal style as bright and colourful – what Baker Boy is all about," he says.

That iconic outfit is staying, but his GCDS line tracksuit is heading into the post, eventually.

Baker Boy is drawn towards the unexpected and not what other performers would wear.

It is bold and vibrant, a tracksuit that matches his memories

"This one's got a lot of memories for me," Baker Boy recalls.

"It was that award show where I won five awards and was crazy."

A collection of an Auralee trench coat is found at the back of his wardrobe.

Baker Boys' reaction is instant, but Aurie only has to give a nod of the head and it's on the pile to go.

"This is from the Rolling Stone shoot."

The coat is described in The Rolling Stone as an "elegant yet edgy design (that) mirrors Baker Boy's evolution in the public eye – from a high-energy performer to a multifaceted artist, who is unafraid to embrace different sides of his personality".

Fans can keep the eye on the online marketplace for Baker Boy's next artistic piece of hip-hop memorabilia.

The charitable artist is a big fan of recycled fashion, and selling it to people who continue to support his colourful clobber is his way of always giving back.

"I know when we make some room in the closest, we are going to be selling some pre-loved items," he says.
