Barkindji and Malyangapa author Allanah Hunt has released her debut novel Forever & Ever, a young adult story of teen love, prejudice and identity set in a Murray-Darling river town.
The novel follows sixteen-year-old Talia, who is pregnant, angry and alone.
Her mother is unwell, her father is absent, and she is rejected by her classmates.
The one person she believed she could rely on — Johnny — has walked away.
Johnny is a smart and confused Barkindji teenager caught between his love for Talia and the pressure to meet his parents' expectations.
He makes a choice he knows he'll regret, and the consequences shape both their futures.
Set in a town marked by long-held secrets and racism, the story explores first love, cultural conflict and the struggle for self-determination.
The book's origins began with a dream the author had at age 18.
"I had a dream I was pregnant and that both my parents refused to support me and both wanted me to have an abortion without consulting me about what I wanted," Ms Hunt said.
"That was the initial kernel that started the story, but it evolved so much.
"Some of the racialised issues discussed in the novel... is loosely based off my parents' love story."
Ms Hunt said the story encourages readers to reflect on privilege, family expectations and the support young people need during major life moments.
"I want readers to understand the continued racisms faced by Indigenous people within Australia, whether that is micro-racisms at school or danger of being victim of a hate crime," she said.
"I also want readers to understand that while interracial marriages are no longer illegal, that doesn't mean white families still don't subscribe to the idea that Blak blood will damage their next generations."
Ms Hunt hopes the book adds to a growing body of literature that values Indigenous identity and cultural strength.
"I want to contribute more books that show Indigenous peoples in positive roles in life and Indigenous culture being seen as valuable, not just deficit," she said.
Forever & Ever is available for purchase now.
