Netflix to fund placements for First Nations people in upcoming hair and beauty short course

Phoebe Blogg -

The National Institute of Dramatic Art had announced a new partnership with Netflix, with fully funded places in an upcoming five-day Hair and Make-Up for Screen short course on offer for First Nations peoples.

Set to commence in January 2025, the new course aims to provide aspiring hair and make-up artists with a valuable insight into the role of hair and make-up artistry in the screen industry.

Netflix will grant five fully funded places in the course for First Nations people and people of colour, with travel and accommodation support provided for applicants who live outside of Sydney.

This additional support aims to provide a unique opportunity to learn from industry professionals at the National Institute of Dramatic Art's (NIDA) internationally recognised Sydney campus in Kensington.

NIDA Director of First Nations and Outreach, Travis Cardona, said there is a pressing need in the industry to encourage more people from First Nations and diverse communities to pursue careers in the hair and make-up artistry field.

"Behind-the-scenes roles, like those in the make-up department, are crucial to storytelling in both film and theatre," Cardona said.

"Their expertise and lived experience are essential in authentically representing the rich diversity of skin tones, hair textures, and cultural identities we see on screens and stages."

Course participants will delve into the crucial role of hair and make-up artists, who help bring authentic on-screen characters to life.

Participants will also explore a variety of styling and application techniques, as well as the importance of maintaining continuity throughout production and production processes.

The newly developed course also offers hands-on opportunities to experiment with special effects, enhancing dramatic impact, and provides insights into potential career paths within the industry.

The initiative was developed in response to the growth of film and TV production in Australia, primarily driven by streaming services, with an ethos of reflecting Australia's diversity in all crew roles.

The course is ideal for those looking to elevate their skills while perfecting their technique in a supportive and inclusive learning environment, with NIDA encouraging creatives looking to pursue their interest in the field to apply.

Applications for the course's Netflix placements are now open, closing Monday 25 November, with the five-day course set to be held from 13-17 January, 2025.
