Queensland Performing Arts Centre in collaboration with Oombarra Productions, is set to present the return of 'Is That You, Ruthie?' from 6 to 15 March at Brisbane's Cremorne Theatre.
The play, written and directed by Goa-Gunggari-Wakka Wakka woman, Leah Purcell, is adapted from Dr Ruth Hegarty's award-winning books 'Is That You, Ruthie?' and 'Buthalangi: A Maranoa Woman'.
Following its world premiere at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) in 2023, the production brings a significant chapter of Australia's truth-telling history back to the stage.
The story explores the relationship between a mother, Ruby, and her daughter, Ruthie, as they endure the impacts of the government's removal policies from 1930 to 1957.
Ruthie, taken at six months old to the dormitory at the Cherbourg Aboriginal Mission, remained there until her late teens, when she was sent to work as a domestic servant.
At 69, Aunty Ruth decided to share her story through her writing to give voice to her experiences and those of her dormitory sisters.
Ms Purcell highlighted the importance of truth-telling and how Ruthie's story reflects the shared experiences of many First Nations children affected by these policies.
"'Is That You, Ruthie?' immerses audiences in the personal journeys of two extraordinary women who endured the harsh policies of 'The Act,'" Ms Purcell said.
"While their plight is not unique, it is an integral part of our country's untold recent history."
Ms Purcell expressed gratitude for the opportunity to bring Aunty Ruth's story to life.
"As a writer and director, I was honoured and deeply humbled that Aunty Ruth, at age 94, entrusted me with her story," she said.
"Two years on, she is still inspiring us to stand in our truth as we continue to breathe life into her story on the stage."
Melodie Reynolds-Diarra will reprise her critically acclaimed role as Ruthie, while Shakira Clanton joins the cast as Ruby.
Ms Purcell shared her enthusiasm for the cast and the production's return to Queensland.
"I am delighted, together with QPAC and Oombarra Productions, to bring Aunty Ruth's compelling story back to its state of origin to further highlight vital facts from our history," she said.
"I am also thrilled the formidable Melodie is returning to bring Ruth to life through her immense talent and to have the incredible Shakira take on the role of Ruby."
The play, performed in a yarn style as a narrated tale, has been praised for its emotional depth and historical significance.
In addition to the performances, a special post-show Q&A with the cast and creatives will be held after the matinee on Monday, 10 March. This event is free for ticket holders attending that performance.
Tickets for 'Is That You, Ruthie?' are available now through QPAC's website or by calling 136 246.
