Yugambeh/Kombumerri-based (Gold Coast) alternative six-piece SELVE has released its new EP 'Breaking Outta Heaven', a companion project to the band's 2025 album 'Breaking Into Heaven.'
The band is led by proud Jabirr Jabirr man Loki Liddle, with Anaiwan man Reece Bowden on lead guitar, Creation Saffigna on vocals, Michael Baldi on drums, Scott French on bass and production, and Liam Kirk on keys.
'Breaking Outta Heaven' follows Breaking Into Heaven, which was recorded at Abbey Road Studios and was billed as the first LP by an Aboriginal artist recorded at the London studio.
The five-track EP includes focus track 'Run Boy Run', along with earlier singles 'Creature of the Night' and 'Desire'.
It is out now through Community Music.
Liddle said the EP continued the world built around Breaking Into Heaven.
"We have had a super fun and wild ride since the release of last year's album Breaking Into Heaven," he said.
"Breaking Outta Heaven is a sneaky bonus chapter.
"It is also a bit sexier, more spacious, a little more open, expansive and inviting."
The EP also connects with Liddle's poetry, following the release of his book 'Damn Good Television' through Magabala Books earlier this week.
Ideas from the book sit across both 'Breaking Into Heaven' and 'Breaking Outta Heaven', with the EP continuing the band's themes of ambition, colonialism, legacy spaces and the pressure of chasing a goal that may not offer freedom.
'Breaking Into Heaven' drew on Nina Simone's words that "the people who built their heaven on your land, are telling you that yours is in the sky".
'Breaking Outta Heaven' asks what comes after reaching that place, and whether the idea of "heaven" can become another trap.
Mr Liddle said the project sits between familiar ground and new directions for the band.
"Perhaps even a little less antagonistic, but still as subversive - if you pay attention," Mr Liddle said.
"It's fun, a mix of something both new and familiar.
"These 5 songs are all beloved to us, and all tie in directly to the narratives and ideas that were being explored in Breaking Into Heaven - we broke into heaven, now we need to break out."
Focus track 'Run Boy Run' moves through a dark bassline, synth-pop touches and a cinematic energy the band links to the anime intros they grew up with.
The track sits close to album focus track 'Leading Man Lost', with lyrics that look at fame, desire, big dreams and the risk of being trapped by the same thing that drives a person forward.
Its central line, "You said it's made of matter, I said it's made of love", echoes one of the wider project's core ideas.
The EP opens with 'Heaven's Open', which brings Liddle and Saffigna's vocals together across psychedelic keys, drums and guitars.
'Creature of the Night' shifts into darker territory, while 'Desire' carries the band's heavier live energy.
Closing track 'Rude Awakening' builds from alt-rock into orchestral arrangements drawn from Selve's sold-out Breaking Into Heaven album preview show at HOTA with the Australian Session Orchestra.
The band said the record's closing moments capture the project's sense of release and return.
"No amount of suffering will ever kill this love in me / I'm ready for this dream to die... My rude awakening's coming," Mr Liddle said.
SELVE will take the EP into a run of headline and festival shows across Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria from June to January, including King St Crawl, Rolling Sets, Crafted Beer Festival and Ocean Sounds Festival.
