Algonquin and Tahltan singer-songwriter Alicia Kayley has released her debut double single, marking the first taste of her debut album due this summer.

The Ottawa-based Pop/R&B, Blues and Soul artist released 'New Beginnings' and 'Don't Break My Heart' through New Sun Music, the Nashville-based label founded by Grammy-nominated Odawa artist Crystal Shawanda.

Kayley, who has been dubbed the 'Indigenous Adele' by the Ottawa Citizen, said 'New Beginnings' came from a period of reflection about a relationship, self-worth and the advice of those closest to her.

The song was shaped around the idea of moving forward without erasing the past.

She explained the meaning behind the track.

"I hated the idea of starting over," Kayley said.

"So I chose new beginnings instead - not erasing the past but carrying forward everything it taught me."

'Don't Break My Heart' explores a different part of the same emotional journey, focusing on the uncertainty and hope that can come with trusting someone again.

Together, the songs introduce her as an artist working across vulnerability, clarity and self-worth.

Kayley is from the Algonquin and Tahltan Nation and was raised in Ottawa, Ontario, where she continues to live.

She holds a Bachelor of Music from Carleton University, where she specialised in classical voice and popular style songwriting.

Her background in classical voice and songwriting has helped shape a sound that brings together technical control and contemporary Pop/R&B influences.

Kayley has performed on major Canadian stages, including the Harbourfront Luminato Festival, Canada Day's 150th Anniversary main stage event on Parliament Hill, and the Site Selection Ceremony for the Residential Schools National Monument.

In 2024, she also performed at the Indigenous Day Festival in Whitehorse, Yukon, and Vancouver Indigenous Fashion Week.

The release is part of her work to create a visible Indigenous presence in mainstream music, particularly for Anishinabe people.

Her partnership with New Sun Music also reflects the label's focus on supporting Indigenous artists across the broader music industry.

Kayley will support the release with several live performances in Ottawa, including a show at Hard Rock Cafe Ottawa's Council Oak Stage on May 23, another Hard Rock Cafe Ottawa show on May 30, and an appearance at Ottawa Bluesfest on July 10.

Both singles are available now on all streaming platforms.
