Filipino and Murrawarri artist DOBBY has just released his debut album, 'WARRANGU: River Story,' through ABC Music.
The album is a call to action, urging care for Country by documenting the cultural significance of the three rivers defining the Brewarrina area: the Bogan River to the south, the Culgoa River to the north, and the Barwon River to the east.
It highlights the severe impact of over-irrigation and water theft, particularly in the Murray-Darling Basin, exploited for almond and cotton production.
"It's finally done - seven years in the making," DOBBY said.
"Its not pop music, it's not something you'll find on Triple J very often."
"For me, this album is my blood sweat and tears."
DOBBY's lead up to the album has seen a number of poignant singles including, 'Matter of time', 'Ancestor' and 'Dirrpi Yuin Patjulinya'.
His meticulous eye and ear for musicality and hard hitting lyrics make DOBBY a formidable storyteller, catching the attention of those who come across his music.
The albums debut is accompanied by a music video for 'Language is the land'.
If the Language is in the land, then the rhythm within the word/
If history's in the song, then I'll be singing' it with the birds/
They kill a million fish, and our Rivers are barely running/
You ain't thinkin' of my community you are swimming up in your money.
This track recaps historic water politics through news soundbites, with DOBBY rapping over an electrified version of the album's opening motif.
Punctuated by saxophone, the track becomes a rallying cry against climate injustice.
The closing interlude, 'Story', features Brad Steadman, who emphasises the link between Country and environmental health.
"I didn't realise this album would be the first thing I would put out," he said.
"As an artist all I can do is talk about what feels right and how I express authentically who I am.
"That river is in my family and my community."
On Instagram, DOBBY said his platform is marked as a political activist, which affects his ability to reach new people in the algorithm.
"Meta is affecting our work," he said.
"I need you to support us as artists and thank you to everyone who has been supporting."
