Gomeroi songman and storyteller Roger Knox, known as the Koori King of Country, has announced his latest single, Prison Wall, will release on March 21.
The track is the first preview of his forthcoming sixth studio album, Buluunarbi and The Old North Star, set for release in mid-2025.
Mr Knox, a respected figure in Australian country music, has spent decades using his music to share stories of resilience, justice, and cultural strength.
Emerging from Tamworth's country scene, he became known for his distinctive voice and commitment to telling the stories of Aboriginal communities.
The song reflects Mr Knox's long history of performing in correctional facilities, a practice he sees as an opportunity to uplift and connect with those inside.
"I've been performing in the prisons for many years," Mr Knox said.
"It's a place where you have to give it everything you've got."
Over the years, Mr Knox has collaborated with many artists, blending country, folk, and rock influences while maintaining a deep connection to his Gomeroi heritage.
His new single, Prison Wall, co-written with Chicago-based musician Jon Langford, paints a picture of a man visited by his young son while incarcerated.
Mr Knox has built a career rooted in storytelling, using music as a tool for healing and cultural preservation.
His past albums, including Stranger in My Land and Give It a Go, have featured reinterpretations of songs by other Indigenous artists, alongside original material that speaks to themes of survival and identity.
His upcoming album, Buluunarbi and The Old North Star, marks a significant milestone as his first to feature entirely original material.
With Prison Wall offering a glimpse into this new body of work, Mr Knox continues to cement his legacy as a leading voice in Australian Indigenous country music.
Prison Wall will be available for streaming from March 21.
