BARKAA to deliver special guest performance at Melbourne Fashion Week

Phoebe Blogg -

Melbourne Fashion Week has announced First Nations musician BARKAA will perform at the event's all-Indigenous ganbu marra runway this month.

The talented Aboriginal rapper is set to perform twice, with a second show added to the schedule after the opening ganbu marra runway sold out.

"You sold out our ganbu marra Opening Runway at Melbourne Museum in just a few days...so we've added another one," the Melbourne Fashion Week Team said via Instagram.

"Plus we are beyond excited to announce BARKAA as a special performer across both runway sessions."

The first ganbu marra runway will take place on the event's opening night - Monday 21 October - with the all-Indigenous runway spotlighting extraordinary First Nations fashion, talent, and creatives.

Held within Melbourne Museum, the runway event - now in its third year - celebrates the vibrant heritage and rich creative spirit of the world's oldest living culture.

Designers and brands showcasing in this year's 2024 Ganbu Marra runway include Amber Days, Baluchay, Clair Helen, Gammin Threads, Ihraa Swim, LORE, MumRed, Take Pride Movement, Yanggurdi and Yarrenyty Arltere Artists.

Guests attending the ganbu marra runway will also be invited to view Piinpi: Contemporary Indigenous Fashion, created by the Bendigo Art Gallery and curated by Shonae Hobson, at Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre following the show.

Whilst all eyes will be on the designs walking the runway, BARKAA is set to provide a powerful prelude to the runway event.

Although there is no confirmation on the songs BARKAA will perform, it is expected her performance to include several of her latest hits from her recently released Big Tidda EP.

BARKAA was unable to comment due to participation in Sorry Business.

Melbourne Fashion Week 2024 will be held from Monday 21 Sunday 27 October.
