Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu's posthumous album, Banbirrngu - The Orchestral Sessions, has been released, offering listeners a new way to experience his ethereal voice.

This album is his first to be delivered in spatial audio and features orchestral reinterpretations of some of his most cherished songs, including Banbirrngu, Bapa, Wiyathul, and Amazing Grace.

Produced by his close friend and collaborator Michael Hohnen and arranged by Erkki Veltheim, the album was recorded with the Prague Metropolitan Orchestra under the conduction of Jan Chalupecký.

"We hope that his voice and importance has been honoured on this new album as we revisit and re-present, his much-loved, delicate, powerful and enigmatic voice, to the wider mainstream world for all to experience," Mr Hohnen said.

"There has been no other like Gurrumul, and I doubt there will ever be again"

The orchestral arrangements introduce a unique emotional depth and dynamic range to Gurrumul's music, enriching his vocals in a way that an acoustic trio cannot replicate.

Mr Hohnen describes the album as a "cycle of Gurrumul's solo musical life and his early offerings to us," aiming to honour his legacy and provide a peaceful escape from the constant media noise.

Gurrumul, a blind Gumatj man from Arnhem Land in Australia's remote north, was one of the most renowned Indigenous performers in modern Australian history.

His songs, predominantly sung in his native Yolŋu languages, have earned multiple ARIA awards and international acclaim.

Throughout his career, Gurrumul collaborated with various artists and orchestras, including performances at Carnegie Hall and partnerships with musicians such as Flume, Sting, Missy Higgins, Thelma Plum, Paul Kelly and A.B. Original.

His music has been used in therapy and education settings, known for its ability to soothe and heal.

Banbirrngu - The Orchestral Sessions is now available for streaming and purchase in digital, vinyl, and CD formats, offering both longtime fans and new listeners an opportunity to experience Gurrumul's powerful and enigmatic voice in a contemporary context.
