Desert Pea Media and Yerrabi Yurwang Child & Family Aboriginal Corporation (YYCFAC) have launched the debut single Narragunnawali by the YY (Yerrabi Yurwang) Crew.

The group comprises Indigenous youth, community members, Elders and staff from Ngunnawal Country in Canberra, ACT.

'Narragunnawali' (pronounced "narra-gunna-wally") translates to 'alive, wellbeing, coming together, and peace' in traditional Ngunnawal language.

The song blends traditional language with contemporary sounds to reflect the community's resilience and hope.

Lyrics from the track highlight themes of cultural identity and connection.

"I've been busy searchin for my place on my path/

On my country for my heart, I've been learning 'bout my past/

There's darkness all around us like I'm gasping for air/

I've been trying to find the love like the love ain't there."

The single is a product of a October 2024 project led by Desert Pea Media, which involved workshops exploring health, wellbeing, cultural identity and aspirations for Aboriginal youth.

DPM chief executive officer and creative director, Tobay Finlayson, described the song as the result of collaboration between generations.

"We are extremely proud to present this song as the result of an extraordinary collaboration between young people, Elders, and community members," Mr Finlayson said.

He added that 'Narragunnawali' symbolises a collective vision for Ngunnawal Country, combining traditional wisdom with youth voices to promote strength and unity.

The track features music by Canberra-based artist and producer GRIM TILLA, creating a melodic hip-hop anthem addressing the challenges of growing up in Canberra while promoting peace and solidarity.

The project received support from the Snow Foundation, ACT Government, Hands Across Canberra, and the Chief Minister's Charitable Fund.

Special recognition was given to the Ngunnawal People and all Indigenous contributors.

'Narragunnawali' is available for streaming on Spotify, Apple Music, and other platforms.
