An acclaimed First Nations documentary is set to screen at NSW Parliament House this week.

The Colleano Heart uncovers the remarkable story of the Colleano family, internationally renowned circus performers whose Aboriginal heritage was hidden for generations.

Through family archives, oral histories and personal accounts, the documentary explores themes of identity, truth-telling, and resilience.

The film is directed by Yaegl filmmaker Pauline Clague, who has worked as a storyteller and producer in film and television for more than 30 years.

"The Colleano Heart tells an extraordinary Australian story about family, identity and resilience," Ms Clague said.

"I'm delighted to be bringing this film to NSW Parliament House, where audiences can come together to explore an important chapter of our shared history and engage in meaningful conversations about culture, connection and belonging."

The Colleano Heart first premiered at the Adelaide Film Festival in 2025 and was nominated for Best Feature Documentary at the Australian International Documentary Conference.

Following the screening, audiences will hear from Pauline Clague during a live panel discussion and Q&A hosted by broadcaster Simon Marnie, alongside Gamilaraay historian Deb Hescott.

NSW Parliament Senior Aboriginal Engagement Officer, Joe Stewart, said The Colleano Heart shines a light on an important and often overlooked chapter of Australian history.

"Hosting this screening at NSW Parliament House provides a unique opportunity for audiences to engage with a powerful First Nations story and learn more about the experiences that have helped shape our nation," Mr Stewart said.

The Colleano Heart screens on Thursday 23 July at NSW Parliament House, Sydney, from 6pm-7:30pm. The panel discussion and Q&A will follow from 7:40pm-8:20pm.
